ORIA arrives in Uruguay with four European princesses

Why an MRV (Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier) or an Albariño Could Be an Excellent Idea for the Atlantic Terroir of Uruguay/Punta del Este?

The maritime coastline from Punta del Este to the Garzón area (within the Maldonado department) offers interesting conditions for cultivating white grape varieties like those mentioned above.

We can envision a blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier (MRV), thanks to the combination of climate and soils that favor the expression of Mediterranean varieties, as well as an outstanding Albariño with great minerality and complexity on the palate.

    • Moderate Atlantic Climate: Punta del Este and Garzón benefit from an Atlantic influence that regulates temperatures, providing warm summers without extreme heat. This is ideal for these varieties, which originate from warm regions and need sufficient heat to reach full maturity, while cool nights help preserve acidity.
    • Diverse Soils: The region's rolling hills, reaching elevations of up to 180 meters, feature granitic and clay-loam soils that offer good drainage and nutrient retention. These soils enhance the wine's minerality and complexity, particularly in Marsanne and Roussanne.
    • Adequate Rainfall: While Uruguay receives more frequent rainfall than some Mediterranean regions, Garzón enjoys a well-balanced water supply. Vineyard management techniques, such as well-ventilated canopies, help prevent disease.
    • Phenolic Maturity and Aromatic Expression: Marsanne contributes structure, Roussanne adds aromatic complexity, and Viognier brings floral and fruity notes. The slow ripening in this area allows each variety to develop its full potential while maintaining freshness.
    • Adaptability to Local Biodiversity: Many wineries in Maldonado practice sustainable viticulture, which aligns well with these varieties, benefiting from methods that respect the ecosystem. This blend could offer a unique profile in Uruguay, standing out for its freshness and elegance, setting it apart from the more robust styles found in other countries.
